Are General Purpose Plug in type relays able to meet SIL3 requirement ?

General purpose relays do not have the features which aid it achieving require safety ratings (redundancy, self diagnostics, reliability ratings etc) Generally the main difference is that safety relays are "force guided", this ensures that in the event of the relay contacts welding together the operating mechanism will force them apart unlike a traditional relay that will weld together and remain welded when de-energized.

We offer a line of safety relays that are specifically applicable to safety systems and can help achieve up to SIL3 ratings.

General purpose relays may still have function in the overall design of the equipment but not as a device performing a safety function as required by the safety standards.
